The folks at Compost Fairy and Atlas Organics have been swapping compost knowledge for the last few years. Good people end up meeting good people when the mission is aligned. It made sense that when Memphis was ready to go REALLY big in composting operations – we’re talking industrial scale – that our friends would be able to help do that.
Bigger scale allows for more diversion capacity and more awesome compost to be utilized in Memphis soil. What does that really mean? It means we will compost forty bajillion more pounds than we could have before, so that waste won’t go to the landfill. That’s pretty great, right?

1. Who is Atlas & what are they going to be doing?
Atlas Organics is in the business of building and spreading composting opportunities. Here in Memphis, they will be taking the reins for our regular operations, as well as facilitating residential and commercial compost services. They’re no stranger to residential services: take a look at their Compost House program and learn more about Atlas Organics.

2. Why are you changing?
Compost Fairy has done what all nonprofits dream of doing – we accomplished the mission! We focused on educating the community about diverting waste, provided composting services, and created an industrial scale compost operation in our city. Most nonprofits are created with the hope of one day working themselves out of a job – HOLY MOLY! We actually did it. Take that for data. As we mentioned before, the Atlas compost hustle & muscle will allow us Compost Fairies to deploy Mission 2.0. It’s time for us to pivot and for someone else to take the reins: cue Atlas Organics. We’re really proud to have them here in Memphis.  Find out more about what led to this decision in our Love Letter.

3. Will Compost Fairy continue as an organization in Memphis?
The mission of Compost Fairy is waste diversion and changing the culture to drive that – and there’s still plenty of work to be done! This tireless board of incredible volunteers is helping this transition for you and are busy cooking up additional strategies along with our sister nonprofits to bring more sustainability education and activation to Memphis. 4. What about Mike?
Mike is still our favorite Fairy and ain’t going anywhere! He’s still making compost for Memphis…just even more of it.  Mike is now the Manager of the Memphis Atlas Organics team.

5. Will there continue to be support for local schools & nonprofits, like Big Green Memphis?
Atlas is committed to investing in Memphis. We are all responsible for growing a more sustainable city and education and involvement in local projects are essential! They know Big Green & our neighborhood schools are critical to spreading sustainability knowledge, as well as building up young minds who will follow in our footsteps to make a more sustainable Memphis.

Also, our residential subscribers, under the new Atlas Organics programs, will still be able to donate some or all their compost to local community partners and school gardens.

6. Why did my monthly subscription fee increase?
As Atlas takes the reins of regular composting operations, your services are getting a boost! That means your monthly subscription fee is increasing, but not for nothing – you’re getting DOUBLE the waste diversion and DOUBLE the compost back. More compost back is what we are really excited about, because that is rebuilding Memphis soil every single month – not just twice a year. MORE IMPACT = MORE BETTER.

DOUBLE the Impact! You will get TWO 4-gallon buckets, instead of one.
Finished Compost EVERY MONTH. You may request TWO 4-gallon buckets of finished compost.
If you choose to wait and receive your finished compost when you need it, no worries, you can do that too. We’ll keep tabs on how much you accumulate – a “compost credit,” if you will. We will deliver one month’s compost credit at a time, but feel free to request compost several weeks in a row to use your credits.

7. Will the free drop sites continue to operate?
Yes, the Cooper-Young Farmers Market & the South Main Farmers Market will keep gathering your veggie scraps. These are a great way you can help educate your friends & neighbors by introducing the joys of diverting waste. Help us spread that sustainability mindedness, Compost Nation!

What are the new services & how does it work?
